A police official was martyred in a targeted gun attack in the Wanda Jogi area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Lakki Marwat district on Monday, officials confirmed.

According to district police spokesperson Qudratullah, the incident occurred when the police official was travelling to his place of duty in a private pickup truck. Terrorists riding motorcycles intercepted the vehicle and opened indiscriminate fire, killing him on the spot.

The attack took place within the jurisdiction of the Shaheed Haibat Ali Khan police station in Darra Pezu Town. The deceased was identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Mumtaz Ali, who was serving as the muharir at the City Police Station in Tank district.

Following the attack, the assailants managed to flee the scene. Police have launched a search operation in the area to apprehend those responsible, the spokesperson added.

The body of the martyred officer was shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital for medico-legal formalities. Later, funeral prayers were offered with full police honours at the police lines in the District Headquarters Complex, Tajazai.

The incident comes amid a surge in terrorist attacks across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with police personnel frequently targeted. In recent days, security forces and armed locals have carried out successful operations in Lakki Marwat, killing several terrorists, including a wanted commander.

Pakistan has witnessed a sharp increase in militant violence, particularly in KP and Balochistan, since the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ended its ceasefire with the government in November 2022.
