In a historic Oval Office address, US President Joe Biden announced his decision to step down from the 2024 election, emphasizing the need to unite the country and pass the torch to younger leaders.

“I revere this office. But I love my country more,” the 81-year-old said in his prime-time speech, urging the nation to embrace democracy and reject hatred. “The defence of democracy, which is at stake, is more important than any title. I have decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation. That is the best way to unite our nation.”

Biden also endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, 59, as the new Democratic presidential nominee. “She’s experienced. She’s tough. She’s capable,” he said. This marks his first televised address since his surprising decision and is likely his last from behind the Resolute Desk.

Biden’s late withdrawal from the race followed pressure from Democrats after a poor debate performance against Donald Trump raised concerns about his age. Speaking in a hushed voice after recovering from a Covid infection, Biden highlighted his achievements while acknowledging it was time to move on.

He stressed the importance of new, younger voices in leadership. “There is a time and a place for new voices, fresh voices — yes, younger voices. And that time and place is now,” he stated.

In a show of support, Biden’s family, including his wife Jill, daughter Ashley, and son Hunter, joined him in the Oval Office as he made his announcement. Jill Biden later thanked supporters on X and urged trust in Kamala Harris.

Biden’s decision has disrupted Trump’s campaign, which had focused on Biden’s age and mental fitness. Trump, now the oldest candidate at 78, criticized Biden’s speech on social media, while Republicans called for Biden to step down entirely.

Despite stepping down from the race, Biden affirmed he is not a lame duck and will continue to focus on the economy and foreign policy for the remainder of his term. A significant goal is achieving a peace deal in the Middle East, a dream pursued by many previous US presidents.

Biden is scheduled to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, with Harris and Trump also holding separate meetings with Netanyahu.

The election campaign is proceeding without Biden, with Trump targeting Harris as his "new victim" in his first rally since she secured enough delegates to become the Democratic nominee. Harris, meanwhile, rallied in Indianapolis, pledging to fight for the nation’s future.
