Quetta Administration Bans PTI Rally Citing Security Concerns; Party Vows to Proceed

The Quetta district administration has imposed a ban on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) planned rally, citing serious security concerns in the region. The decision comes after PTI applied for permission to hold the rally either at Ayub Stadium or the hockey ground, which was ultimately denied by the authorities.

The deputy commissioner of Quetta explained that the government decided to deny permission due to security risks, particularly in light of the ongoing Public Service Commission exams being held at Ayub Stadium. He added that managing security for a large political gathering under the current conditions would be a challenge. Authorities also emphasized that any violation of the ban would result in strict legal action.

In an attempt to maintain control over the situation, the district administration has stationed a heavy police presence around the hockey ground venue and its surrounding areas. Officers have sealed the main entrance of the venue and blocked access routes leading to the rally site.

Despite the ban, PTI representatives in Balochistan have reaffirmed their commitment to holding the rally, with a spokesperson stating, “The rally will take place regardless of the ban.” The spokesperson urged supporters to gather at the hockey ground by 2 pm, signaling the party’s resolve to go forward with the event despite the restrictions.

The administration’s move to prohibit the rally is also linked to a broader government directive that bars political events from being held in sports facilities, a decision that has further fueled tensions. While PTI leaders in Quetta have vowed to defy the ban, PTI members in Karachi faced challenges of their own. Key party leaders Haleem Adil Sheikh and Raja Azhar, along with several others, were detained by authorities as they prepared to leave for a PTI rally in Swabi.

The situation in Quetta and Karachi highlights the ongoing political tensions and the complex relationship between opposition parties and the provincial government, particularly amid security concerns and the potential for unrest.
