Renowned legal expert and former law minister Anwer has passed away at the age of 85. Born on November 4, 1938, in Delhi, Anwer pursued his education at the University of the Punjab, where he earned a BSc (Hons) and LLB degree. He later attended the prestigious University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, obtaining a BA (Hons) degree.
Anwer embarked on his legal career in 1962 as a high court advocate and soon established himself as a leading figure in Pakistan’s legal landscape. His expertise and dedication led him to serve as the country’s law minister from 1997 to 1999 under Nawaz Sharif’s government. During his tenure, he played a crucial role in shaping Pakistan’s legal framework and implementing significant reforms. He also served as a senator for six years.
Family, friends, and colleagues have expressed their deep sorrow at his passing. His grandson, Yousuf Khalid Anwer, also a lawyer, described him as having a "larger than life" personality. His daughter, Ayesha Siddiqui, shared an emotional tribute, calling him "a shining light" in their lives and "exemplary in every way."
Senior lawyer Makhdoom Ali Khan, a close friend and confidante, praised Anwer’s brilliance in the courtroom, stating, "As a lawyer, he always left you feeling as if he had given an unanswerable case."
Munawarus Salam, a partner at Lahore-based law firm Cornelius, Lane and Mufti, also expressed his grief, remembering Anwer as a kind mentor who was always encouraging to younger professionals.
Anwer’s legacy in the legal world remains unparalleled. His work, mentorship, and impact on Pakistan’s judicial system will continue to inspire future generations.
