Rizwan Stresses Awareness & Professionalism Ahead of Champions Trophy

Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan has stressed the importance of improving the team's awareness and professionalism as the national side gears up for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, set to begin in Karachi on Wednesday.

The tournament marks a historic moment for Pakistan, as the country hosts its first ICC event since co-hosting the 1996 ODI World Cup. The Green Shirts will kick off their campaign against New Zealand at the National Stadium, Karachi, amidst high hopes and growing anticipation.

“A global event has come to Pakistan after 29 years, so I think the whole nation should enjoy this historic occasion,” Rizwan said while addressing a press conference on Tuesday.

A Chance for Redemption

Pakistan's last ICC triumph was the Champions Trophy victory against India in 2017. Since then, the team has seen mixed fortunes in global events, including semi-final and final appearances in the T20 World Cups of 2021 and 2022. However, inconsistent performances have often resulted in early exits.

"On a personal level, I think we need to improve our awareness and professionalism," Rizwan remarked. "We have achieved great things, and the team is talented. The world recognizes our players' potential even when some at home might have doubts."

The Underrated Factor

When asked about the perception that Pakistan performs better when underestimated, Rizwan responded with a smile:
"I think if this is how we can win, then you should underrate us only."

He highlighted the team's hardworking, courageous, and intelligent nature, expressing confidence that their efforts would yield positive results with divine help.

Babar Azam to Continue as Opener

Addressing speculation regarding the opening batting order, Rizwan confirmed that Babar Azam would continue to open the innings, particularly in the home conditions.

“We needed someone solid and technical to handle spinners, and Babar fits that role perfectly," the skipper explained. He dismissed any rumors of Babar's reluctance to open, affirming that the star batter remains content with the decision.

Tactical Adjustments for Success

Rizwan acknowledged the team's close misses in the past, particularly during the 2021 and 2022 T20 World Cups.

“When Babar Azam was captain, we played a semi-final and a final, but we are trying to achieve that one per cent because of which we are losing towards the end,” he said.

The captain noted that the team had refrained from making drastic changes, relying instead on strategic adjustments suited to local conditions.

Historic Homecoming for Cricket

The Champions Trophy's return to Pakistan is more than just another tournament. It represents the country’s resurgence as a safe and capable host for international cricket, following the 2009 attack on the Sri Lankan team bus that left Pakistan isolated for nearly a decade.

With the nation’s hopes pinned on the Green Shirts, Rizwan’s call for professionalism and the team's determination to excel add to the excitement surrounding the tournament's opening clash against New Zealand.
