Russia launched a massive assault on Ukraine on Saturday, deploying more than 450 drones and 45 missiles, resulting in the deaths of at least three civilians and injuring dozens more, while targeting electricity and gas facilities across three regions.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that two people were killed and 12 injured in a drone strike on a residential building in Dnipro, while a civilian was killed in Kharkiv. The attacks caused significant damage to energy infrastructure in the Kyiv, Poltava, and Kharkiv regions, according to Prime Minister Yulia Svirdenko, with emergency repair operations currently underway.
“These attacks demonstrate the urgent need to increase pressure on Moscow,” Zelensky said in a Telegram message. “Any attempt to harm citizens before winter by targeting energy should be met with sanctions that target all of Russia’s energy without exception.”
The Russian Defense Ministry claimed the operations were in response to Ukrainian strikes inside Russia. Meanwhile, Ukraine has continued launching drone attacks on Russian oil facilities to weaken Moscow’s combat capabilities and financial resources.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported shooting down 406 Russian drones and 9 missiles, though 26 missiles and 52 drones hit 25 locations, causing heavy damage.
Svirdenko emphasized that government and energy companies are working tirelessly to restore electricity, water, and heating supplies to prevent civilian hardships as winter approaches.
This attack marks one of the largest Russian strikes targeting Ukraine’s energy sector this fall, continuing a strategy seen throughout the nearly four-year-long conflict.
