MOSCOW – Russian gas exports to Europe via Ukraine remained steady on Wednesday, with data from Gazprom, the state-owned energy giant, showing no changes in the flow volumes compared to the previous day. Gazprom’s nominations for gas flows to Austria from Slovakia were also unchanged, though Austria’s OMV gas supply was halted by Gazprom on Saturday over a contractual dispute, with no further comment from the Russian company.
It remains unclear where the gas originally destined for OMV has been redirected, though Slovakia's state-owned firm SPP confirmed it was still receiving gas from Russia, implying that other European buyers are purchasing more Russian gas in light of the supply halt. Gazprom has committed to sending 42.4 million cubic meters of gas to Europe on Wednesday via Ukraine, matching the volume from Tuesday.
The level of nominations—requests for gas deliveries—remained consistent with recent days, with flows to Slovakia and the Czech Republic holding steady, despite the disruption caused by the halted supply to Austria. However, nominations for gas flowing to Austria from Slovakia were down about 13% compared to levels before the cutoff.
In this uncertain energy landscape, Russia's ongoing gas exports highlight the tension and complexity of Europe's reliance on Russian energy sources, especially as demand for Russian gas in Europe remains strong.
