Russian Missile Strike on Poltava Kills 51, Injures Over 200 in One of the Deadliest Attacks of the War

Two Russian ballistic missiles struck an educational facility and hospital in the central Ukrainian city of Poltava, resulting in the deaths of at least 51 people and injuring more than 200 others. The attack, which is being described as one of the deadliest since the war began on February 24, 2022, has left the city and the nation in mourning.

The missiles hit just after an air raid alert was sounded, as many were seeking shelter. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that one of the buildings at the Military Institute of Communications was partially destroyed, with many people trapped under the rubble. "Many were saved," Zelenskyy stated, adding that rescue operations are ongoing.

Poltava, located approximately 350 kilometers southeast of Kyiv, has become a focal point of grief and outrage. Ukrainian authorities, including Poltava Governor Filip Pronin, have declared three days of mourning. "The enemy certainly must answer for all [its] crimes against humanity," Pronin said, expressing the collective sorrow of the region.

President Zelenskyy reiterated his calls for more air defense systems and long-range weapons from Western allies, emphasizing the need for immediate action to prevent further loss of life. "Every day of delay means loss of life," he warned, as the Ukrainian government vowed to hold Russia accountable for the attack.

The international community watches with growing concern as Ukraine endures yet another brutal assault in this prolonged conflict, now in its 900th day. As rescue efforts continue, Ukraine's resolve to protect its people and secure justice remains steadfast.
