Sam Altman Admits OpenAI Is on the

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, admitted on Friday that the company has been “on the wrong side of history” when it comes to openness about its artificial intelligence technology.

During an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on Reddit, Altman addressed concerns about OpenAI's transparency, expressing his support for publishing research and developing a new open-source strategy. However, he acknowledged that not all OpenAI team members share this perspective and that transparency is not the company’s top priority at present.

Altman’s comments come amid rising competition from open-source AI projects like DeepSeek, whose R1 chatbot has gained attention for its high performance and low cost.

Companies like Meta, DeepSeek, and Mistral are challenging proprietary models by providing developers with free access to their tools’ source code, creating a stark contrast to the more guarded approaches of OpenAI and Google.
