POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
Five senior leaders of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), currently incarcerated at Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail, have issued a statement warning that internal political divisions and external pressures are endangering Pakistan’s sovereignty, economy, and democratic stability.
The leaders — Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Dr Yasmin Rashid, Ejaz Chaudhry, Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed, and Omar Sarfraz Cheema — emphasized the need to put aside personal ambitions and political grudges to safeguard the country. Their statement, issued via their counsel and shared on X, comes amid heightened regional tensions and domestic economic challenges.
The PTI leaders called for dialogue within the opposition alliance Tehreek Tahafuz Ayeen-i-Pakistan (TTAP) and the PTI’s political committee, proposing a joint parliamentary session to formulate a national strategy.
Highlighting regional instability and the ongoing US-Israeli attacks on Iran, the leaders warned that foreign investment could be affected, and rising oil and gas prices could increase Pakistan’s import bill, jeopardizing the current account surplus. They also expressed concern over slowing remittances, higher shipping costs, stagnating exports, rising unemployment, and pressure on the agriculture sector.
“At our current GDP growth, poverty reduction is not possible. Business as usual is no longer viable, and political confrontation is not desirable,” the statement read.
The leaders stressed that Pakistan’s political and military leadership must coordinate to manage external threats and economic challenges. They urged all stakeholders — including government, opposition, military, judiciary, media, and civil society — to unite for the country’s stability.
“Parliamentarians who believe in parliamentary sovereignty must come forward and play their role to pull Pakistan out of the current political stalemate,” the statement added.
The PTI leaders concluded by appealing to the government to acknowledge opposition concerns and work toward mutually agreed solutions, stressing that the nation requires a “healing touch” to overcome the current crisis.
