POLITICS & POLICY MAKING

Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon responded sharply to the recent campaign launched by Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) against the Sindh government, challenging the party to contest the elections again to determine who truly holds the public mandate.
In a press conference held on April 8, 2025, Memon accused MQM of having ruined the lives of many families during its past reign, referring to their history of violence and divisiveness. He challenged MQM leaders, including Mustafa Kamal and Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, to contest elections once more and let the people decide who truly has their support.
“I will also contest again,” Memon said, “and it will be clear who has the public mandate. The MQM has ruined the laps of thousands of mothers in the past, and their politics of hatred will not be allowed to resurface.”
The remarks come amid MQM’s ongoing accusations against the Sindh government for its handling of Karachi's street crime. However, Memon defended the Sindh government's efforts, asserting that it has been actively working to combat crime in the city. He also highlighted the Sindh government’s development initiatives, emphasizing the progress being made in various sectors.
Memon also condemned the MQM’s decision to boycott local body elections, calling it an act of cowardice due to the fear of defeat. “Who told MQM to boycott the elections?” he questioned, accusing them of backing out because they knew they could not win.
Furthermore, Memon reflected on the past, accusing MQM of being responsible for the deaths of police personnel during the Karachi operation, adding that many of the police officers involved were martyred selectively.
Despite the contentious political rhetoric, Memon refrained from using the same aggressive language used by Mustafa Kamal against Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, showing restraint in his comments. However, his underlying message was clear: the Sindh government’s development efforts will continue, and Karachi will not be allowed to fall back into the hands of those who played a role in its historical violence and instability.
