POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
The Sindh Assembly on Saturday passed a landmark resolution declaring Karachi an “inseparable part” of the province, rejecting any proposals suggesting otherwise. The resolution, tabled by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and passed with a majority, condemned any conspiracy aimed at dividing Sindh or creating a separate province for Karachi.
“Karachi is, and shall forever remain, an integral and inseparable part of Sindh,” the resolution stated, urging all political stakeholders to avoid divisive rhetoric or actions that threaten provincial harmony and national cohesion.
The resolution comes amid repeated calls by the MQM-P for federal intervention, demanding that Karachi be made a “federal territory.” While the majority of the Sindh Assembly supported the resolution, MQM-P members voted against it, citing alleged constitutional conflicts.
CM Murad Ali Shah defended the resolution, pointing out that a similar resolution was unanimously passed in 2019 with MQM-P’s support. “Karachi cannot be divided or separated from Sindh. Anyone who believes in Pakistan will support this resolution,” he asserted. He added that opposing the resolution would amount to supporting the division of Sindh.
The resolution also highlighted the historical and cultural significance of Karachi, tracing its roots from Kolachi to becoming the economic engine of Pakistan. It emphasized that the contributions of Sindh’s people, from Karachi to the province’s northern regions, were foundational in building the city’s legacy.
Referring to the constitutional framework, the resolution cited Article 239, emphasizing that no provincial boundaries can be altered without the consent of a two-thirds majority in the respective provincial assembly. It also referenced past resistance to the One Unit scheme and the restoration of Sindh in 1970 as testaments to the province’s commitment to unity and self-determination.
Concluding his remarks, CM Murad Ali Shah reiterated that “even the thought, dream, or idea of breaking Sindh will never succeed,” reinforcing the Assembly’s commitment to the province’s unity, dignity, and legacy.
