Sindh High Court Suspends Luxury Vehicle Purchase for Assistant Commissioners

The Sindh High Court has issued a stay on the Sindh government's controversial decision to purchase 138 double cabin vehicles for Assistant Commissioners. This decision comes in response to a petition filed by Jamaat-e-Islami Member of the Sindh Assembly, Muhammad Farooq, and others, who challenged the multi-billion-rupee expenditure.

The petitioners argue that the proposed vehicles, costing approximately 2 billion rupees, are an extravagant use of public funds, particularly at a time when basic services like health and education in the province are underfunded. They contended that the expenditure would not benefit the public and should be deemed illegal.

The court has suspended the implementation of the vehicle purchase notification issued on September 3 and has directed all parties to respond within the next four weeks. The Sindh government had requested 2 billion rupees from the provincial finance department to fund this purchase, with each vehicle priced at over one crore rupees.

The case highlights ongoing debates over the allocation of public resources and the role of government expenditures amidst high inflation and public service deficits.
