The Supreme Court has directed former Prime Minister Imran Khan to respond regarding his appearance in court after the government filed a contempt of court petition against the PTI founder for violating a court order during the May 25, 2022, long march.
A constitutional bench of the Supreme Court heard the government's petition on contempt of court, where both Imran Khan’s lawyer and the Additional Attorney General appeared in court.
During the hearing, the court questioned whether the government wished to proceed with the petition. The Additional Attorney General confirmed the government’s intent to have a serious hearing on the matter, stating that the PTI founder had violated a court order during the long march.
Justice Aminuddin, heading the constitutional bench, emphasized that the contempt matter was between the court and the individual accused of disrespecting it. If the court chose to take notice, Imran Khan would be required to appear before it. The court then advised the government’s legal team to seek instructions regarding Imran Khan’s appearance in court.
Imran Khan's lawyer, Salman Akram Raja, responded, explaining that his client had already submitted a response, but due to the shutdown of mobile services during the time of the hearing, the court’s verbal order had not reached Imran Khan and lawyers were unable to make contact.
The hearing was adjourned indefinitely as the constitutional bench deferred further proceedings on the case.
This legal development follows the May 25, 2022, long march, during which PTI supporters clashed with the government. The government subsequently approached the court and filed the contempt of court petition, accusing Imran Khan of not adhering to a court order.
The case is now expected to continue with further hearings in the coming months, as the legal complexities surrounding the contempt charge unfold.
