Tariq Bashir Cheema Suspended from National Assembly for Abusive Remarks Towards Zartaj Gul Wazir

The National Assembly of Pakistan suspended Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) legislator Tariq Bashir Cheema from the day’s session over his alleged use of abusive language towards Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) member Zartaj Gul Wazir.

The incident occurred during Thursday’s assembly session when Cheema delivered a speech and was interrupted by Gul, who taunted him about the Bahawalpur University case involving Cheema's son. As Cheema returned to his seat after speaking with PTI’s Ali Muhammad Khan, Gul made a remark that reportedly infuriated Cheema. He approached her seat and whispered something in her ear, prompting an immediate reaction from PTI-SIC members who rushed towards the treasury benches.

Amidst the commotion, some PTI members attempted to physically confront Cheema, but he was quickly escorted out by other treasury MNAs. Following this, opposition members gathered in front of the speaker’s dais, demanding action against Cheema for his inappropriate language.

In response to the protest, PTI lawmakers met with NA Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, calling for Cheema's suspension. Cheema later apologized to Gul "unconditionally," which she accepted. However, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan insisted on a motion to suspend Cheema for the remainder of the ongoing session.

Introducing the motion, Speaker Ayaz Sadiq recounted the incident and cited Cheema’s violation of Rule 30 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the National Assembly, 2007. This rule prohibits any member from eroding the "sanctity" or "dignity" of the house. Cheema was named under Rule 21, which allows the speaker to suspend members who abuse the rules and obstruct proceedings.

“He thereby eroded the sanctity of the house [...] thereby disregarding the authority of the chair and abusing the rules and willfully [...] obstructing the proceedings,” Sadiq explained. The motion to suspend Cheema was overwhelmingly supported by the MNAs present.

Following the suspension, Zartaj Gul took to social media platform X to express her gratitude. “Yesterday, a very upsetting incident took place in the National Assembly. Thank you Parliament of Pakistan,” she wrote, appreciating Speaker Ayaz Sadiq's decision to bar Cheema from the house.
