CRIME

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa — In the early hours of Wednesday, terrorists struck a joint peace-committee and police patrol in the limits of Hoyed Police Station, leaving one officer dead and four others wounded.
According to regional police spokesperson Khanzala Quraishi, members of the local peace committee, alongside police personnel, were conducting routine patrols at approximately 12:30 am when they came under fire. Head Constable Murtaza Jan was fatally shot, while a school teacher, a police constable, and two community volunteers sustained injuries. The school teacher remains in critical condition at a nearby hospital.
“The terrorists fled the scene due to the quick response from the police,” Quraishi told Dawn.com. He added that the fallen and the injured were promptly evacuated for medical treatment.
Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed—who was in the region assessing security—praised the swift action that likely prevented further casualties. “Local residents are fed up with these militants and stand ready to defend their communities,” the IG remarked.
KP has seen a resurgence of terror activity over the past year, particularly after the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ended its ceasefire in November 2022 and declared attacks on security forces. Just weeks ago, another policeman was gunned down at Mandan Police Station in Bannu, underscoring the ongoing threat.
Authorities have intensified joint patrols with community peace committees to bolster local security. But yesterday’s ambush highlights the continued risks faced by those on the front lines of Pakistan’s fight against militancy.
