A bomb explosion in Mastung district tragically claimed the lives of eight people, including five children, while injuring 29 others. The incident has drawn strong condemnation from Balochistan’s Chief Minister Sarfaraz Bugti, who expressed sorrow that terrorists have begun targeting innocent children and poor laborers.
The explosion was reported by state broadcaster PTV News, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stating the blast took place at a “girls’ high school,” though later reports clarified it occurred near the Mastung Civil Hospital. Kalat Division Commissioner Naeem Bazai shared that the explosion took place around 8:35 am, just meters from the hospital and close to a police mobile that was reportedly the target.
Commissioner Bazai added that an improvised explosive device (IED) had been attached to a motorcycle, which was detonated near the police vehicle. Mastung District Police Officer (DPO) Miandad Umrani further detailed that four policemen were among the injured, and the children who lost their lives were between the ages of five and ten. The explosion also caused significant damage to a police van and nearby rickshaws.
In response to the incident, Balochistan CM Sarfaraz Bugti decried the attack as "inhumane." In a social media statement, he condemned the targeting of children, deeming it an exploitation of their vulnerability. Bugti emphasized that “the monster of terrorism can only be fought together,” and vowed justice for the victims. Prime Minister Shehbaz and Acting President Yusuf Raza Gilani also extended their condolences, condemning the attack and emphasizing the need to eradicate terrorism from the region.
The surge in violence in Balochistan has brought intense focus to terrorism in Pakistan, particularly in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Although reports indicate a 24% decline in terror attacks in September, the recent months have seen spikes in incidents, heightening the national call to action.
While no group has claimed responsibility for this blast, this year’s violence-related statistics reveal Pakistan’s growing struggle with terrorism. In 2023, the country has suffered 1,524 fatalities and 1,463 injuries from a total of 789 terror attacks and counter-terror operations.
This tragic incident underscores the urgent need for comprehensive measures to prevent terrorism. Authorities and community members alike hope to see robust security improvements in the region, alongside efforts to support the injured and bereaved families.
