Kyiv, Ukraine: Former U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his disapproval of the recent Russian missile and drone attacks on Kyiv, calling them unnecessary and poorly timed, while urging Russian President Vladimir Putin to halt the violence. On his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump wrote, “I am not happy with the Russian strikes on Kyiv. Not necessary, and very bad timing. Vladimir, stop! 5000 soldiers a week are dying. Let’s get the peace deal done!”
The attack, which marked Moscow's largest assault on Kyiv in months, saw 70 missiles and 145 drones launched at Ukraine’s capital, killing at least eight people and injuring dozens. The strikes have intensified over recent weeks, with Russia continuing to target civilian areas despite Ukraine's resilience.
One of the survivors, Anna Balamutova, described how she and her children narrowly escaped the devastating attacks. Balamutova, who had previously relocated from Pavlograd as it faced increasing threats, recalled how she ran with her children to a nearby shelter during a wave of explosions. “It was just a miracle that we were saved by the fact that the alarm was raised and we came down immediately,” she said, describing the terror of fleeing amidst the blasts.
Rescuers worked tirelessly through the rubble of heavily damaged buildings in Kyiv’s Sviatyshynsky district, where a woman sat in mourning over a body covered by a blue sheet. The explosions that shook Kyiv left widespread devastation, with numerous people trapped under the rubble.
Olena Davydiuk, another witness to the attack, voiced her fears about Russia’s intentions. “It wants to destroy us, that’s all,” she said, reflecting on the indiscriminate nature of the strikes. Ukrainian officials have confirmed that Moscow’s primary target was military installations, though the civilian casualties suggest a wider scope of destruction.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who had been in South Africa at the time of the attack, cut his visit short and condemned the assault. More than 80 people were reported to be wounded, with emergency crews continuing to search for survivors amidst the rubble. Kyiv's Mayor Vitali Klitschko declared a day of mourning for Friday and confirmed that at least 31 people had been hospitalized, including five children.
Despite Kyiv's robust defense systems, which include shelters and metro stations, the city's residents are reminded that no place is safe from the ongoing war. Balamutova expressed the harsh reality, stating, “As it turned out, you can’t escape the war anywhere. No matter where you go.”
As the conflict rages on, the international community, including Trump, continues to call for a peace deal to end the violence that has devastated Ukraine for over three years.
