Turkish Shooter Yusuf Dikec Becomes Internet Sensation with Casual Style After Winning Olympic Silver

Turkish Olympic shooter Yusuf Dikec has garnered significant online attention for his laid-back style after winning a silver medal in the mixed team 10m air pistol event at the Paris Olympics. Partnered with Sevval Ilayda Tarhan, Dikec secured silver for Turkey on Tuesday, losing to Serbia in the gold medal match.

However, it was Dikec's relaxed posture that stole the spotlight. Wearing standard glasses, a team T-shirt, and with his left hand casually in his pocket, Dikec eschewed the specialised equipment often used by his competitors, such as headphones, special lenses, or a hat.

"Be cool like Yusuf Dikec. Congratulations on winning the silver medal in such a cool way," read a congratulatory post from the French embassy to Turkey on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Other social media users drew comparisons to cinema icon James Bond, with some memes humorously adding a cigarette to Dikec’s mouth to emphasize his calm demeanor.

In an interview with Turkish channel TGRT Haber, Dikec acknowledged that his technique of shooting with both eyes open is uncommon in the sport, where most athletes shoot with one eye closed or obscured. "My shooting technique is one of the rare shooting techniques in the world. I shoot with both eyes open. Even the referees are surprised by this," he said.

Dikec downplayed the surprise at his success, stating, “This year we prepared a lot and worked a lot […], and this success belongs to all of Turkey. Success doesn’t come with your hands in your pockets.”

Social media users also pointed out that his shooting partner, Sevval Ilayda Tarhan, adopted a similarly casual hand-in-pocket stance, though she wore headphones and a visor.

Turkish Sports Minister Osman Askin Bak congratulated Dikec on social media, posting a photo of himself mimicking Dikec’s now-famous pose. Dikec and Tarhan celebrated their achievement at the Champions Park at the Trocadero complex in Paris on Wednesday, proudly displaying their medals and the Turkish flag.

The duo’s performance and unique style have made a memorable mark on the Olympics, showcasing that excellence can come in many forms.
