Two Siblings Killed by Toxic Gas from Insecticide in Sindh; Seven Others in Critical Condition

In a tragic incident in Sehwan, Sindh, two siblings—aged six and two—have lost their lives after inhaling toxic gas from insecticides used on wheat. The deaths have brought renewed attention to the dangers of pesticide use and its impact on public health.
The medical superintendent of Sehwan Hospital, Syed Abdullah Shah, reported that the children were affected by the pesticide used on wheat. Seven other individuals are currently in critical condition due to the same toxic exposure.
“This is not an isolated case,” Shah said. “There have been similar incidents recently, leading to a total of seven fatalities across all such occurrences.”
Just last week, a separate incident in Karachi resulted in the deaths of three people, including two children, who were trapped inside a 100-foot-deep well. The likely cause of death was identified as toxic gases and a lack of oxygen.
In January 2023, Karachi’s Keamari district witnessed a horrific event where at least 18 people died due to toxic chemicals from factories. The Health Department attributed the deaths to interstitial lung disease caused by these chemicals.
The recent spate of incidents highlights the urgent need for improved safety measures and regulations regarding the use of pesticides and toxic substances. As investigations continue, authorities are expected to take action to prevent further tragedies and ensure the safety of communities affected by such hazardous conditions.
