UN Human Rights Working Group Condemns Imran Khan’s Detention as Arbitrary and Illegal

The United Nations Human Rights Working Group has deemed the detention of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan as arbitrary and against international law. The legal opinion emerged from a petition filed by the prominent law firm representing Zulfi Bukhari, challenging Khan's arrest.

The report by the UN Working Group highlighted a lack of legal justification for Imran Khan's detention, suggesting it was politically motivated to disqualify him from the political arena. It called for the immediate release of the former Prime Minister and urged the Pakistani government to permit the working group to visit and conduct an independent investigation into the conditions of his imprisonment.

Expressing significant concerns, the working group noted that Imran Khan was denied fundamental rights, including the ability to defend himself and cross-examine witnesses, with these privileges being granted solely to government lawyers.

The UN body attempted to engage with the Pakistani government for their perspective on the matter but received no response. The working group’s findings add international pressure on Pakistan to address what it describes as a violation of Khan's human rights and legal protections.

The working group's report underlines the need for transparency and adherence to international legal standards in Pakistan's judicial processes. It also highlights the broader implications for human rights and the rule of law in the country.
