UNHCR High Commissioner Filippo Grandi Meets Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Discusses Afghan Refugees' Repatriation

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the Prime Minister House to discuss the issue of Afghan refugees in Pakistan.

 

During the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed appreciation for the United Nations' steadfast support in hosting Afghan refugees for more than four decades. He underscored Pakistan's commitment to ensuring the dignified and respectful stay of Afghan refugees despite numerous challenges.

 

Prime Minister Sharif emphasized the importance of UNHCR's role in promoting a sustainable solution for Afghan refugees, particularly focusing on their safe and dignified repatriation as a priority for the government of Pakistan. He called upon the international community to assist in addressing the socio-economic challenges and security threats associated with the return of Afghan refugees to Afghanistan.

 

In response, UNHCR High Commissioner Filippo Grandi paid tribute to Pakistan for its longstanding hospitality towards millions of Afghan refugees over the years. He assured Prime Minister Sharif of UNHCR's continued collaboration with Pakistan to meet the basic needs of Afghan refugees and support efforts for their voluntary return when conditions allow.

 

The meeting between UNHCR's High Commissioner and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif highlights ongoing efforts to address the complex issue of Afghan refugees in Pakistan, underscoring the importance of international cooperation and support.
