An elementary school in Tehran’s Niloufar Square was reportedly hit during US-Israeli attacks on Iran, according to Esmaeil Baghaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Baghaei shared video footage on social media showing the Shahid Hamedani School before and after the attack, though details regarding casualties were not immediately released.
If confirmed, this would mark the fourth school struck in Iran since the outbreak of hostilities. The first reported strike occurred at Shajareh Tayyebeh girls’ school in Minab, which killed 160 children and five staff members, according to UN experts.
Some Israel-linked sources claimed the school was part of an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps base, but investigations by satellite imagery analysts and official Iranian sources indicate that the school has been separate from any military facility for over a decade. The strike pattern has raised concerns about intelligence accuracy and whether the school was deliberately targeted.
The US military acknowledged investigating the incident. Reuters reported that US officials believe forces may have been responsible but have not reached a final conclusion. UN rights chief Volker Turk urged Washington to conduct a “prompt, transparent, and impartial investigation,” emphasizing the need for accountability and redress for victims.
Other schools have also been hit in recent days. On Thursday, two schools in Parand, southwest of Tehran, sustained damage from missile strikes, affecting nearby residential areas. UNICEF reported that at least 181 children have died in the strikes on Iran so far, from a total of over 1,300 fatalities.
International observers warn that deliberately targeting schools constitutes a war crime, and confirmation of a US role could make this among the deadliest civilian attacks in decades of Middle Eastern conflicts.
