Envoys for US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met at the World Economic Forum (WEF) on Tuesday for over two hours, amid reports that the signing of a planned $800 billion Ukraine reconstruction “prosperity plan” was postponed due to tensions over Greenland.
The meeting included US special envoy Steve Witkoff, Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, and Russian special envoy Kirill Dmitriev. Witkoff described the talks as “very positive.” Plans are underway for further discussions involving President Putin and the Ukrainian delegation, reportedly scheduled to take place in Moscow.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to comment on the Davos discussions but emphasized Russia’s need for clarity on talks between the US, European leaders, and Ukraine.
Greenland Tensions Delay Plan
The United Kingdom’s Financial Times reported that Trump’s controversial bid to acquire Greenland has caused tensions within NATO, derailing the scheduled signing of the Ukraine reconstruction plan at Davos. Officials indicated that while the signing was postponed, it could still occur at a later date.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte warned that the alliance must remain focused on Ukraine, calling it the “number one priority” for European and US security. He expressed concern that ongoing distractions could hinder Ukraine’s defense, including the acquisition of critical interceptors.
Zelenskyy Stays in Kyiv
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced he would not attend Davos unless security guarantee documents and the reconstruction plan were finalized. Instead, he will remain in Kyiv overseeing relief efforts as Russian missile and drone attacks continue to target Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, particularly in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipro.
Ukrainian authorities reported overnight attacks on Kryvyi Rih, killing two and injuring one, while Russian drone fragments sparked a fire at the Afipsky oil refinery in Krasnodar. These attacks have contributed to widespread power and water outages, leaving hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians struggling amid sub-zero temperatures.
The Davos talks underscore the fragile balance between diplomacy and ongoing conflict, as global powers seek solutions for Ukraine while managing unrelated tensions within NATO.
