14 Dead, Dozens Injured in Punjab as Monsoon Rains Trigger Roof and Wall Collapses

At least 14 people, including eight children, have lost their lives in Punjab over the past four days due to rain-related incidents as the province experiences its first spell of monsoon rains. Rescue 1122 and the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) confirmed the rising death toll on Saturday, highlighting the growing dangers posed by extreme weather events.

The latest fatalities occurred in Lahore's Shahdara Town at around 3:20 am, when the mud roof of a single-story house collapsed in the Abbas Nagar area. Two individuals died on the spot, and four others sustained injuries. The bodies and injured were shifted to Shahdara Hospital and Mayo Hospital.

According to the PDMA, 12 people had already been confirmed dead in incidents between Wednesday and Friday. The number rose to 14 today as new reports emerged. A total of 28 rain-related incidents have been reported across Punjab in the last four days.

Most casualties occurred due to roof and wall collapses triggered by torrential downpours. In Kasur, four children died in separate roof and wall collapses. Additional deaths were reported in Okara, Bahawalnagar, Faisalabad, and Wazirabad, where a man and a child died in a wall collapse.

In Jhelum, two men drowned in a rainwater nullah, while a lightning strike in Khanewal claimed another life. Rain-related fatalities were also recorded in Mandi Bahauddin, Sahiwal, Chiniot, Multan, Sheikhupura, and Nankana Sahib. In Rahim Yar Khan, a cow was killed when a tree fell during a windstorm.

PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia has instructed local authorities to provide urgent medical care to the injured and financial assistance to affected families. He also advised the public to avoid non-essential travel and refrain from living in dilapidated structures during severe weather.

“Do not let children play near storm drains, electric wires, or poles,” Kathia cautioned.

The PDMA forecasts that the ongoing monsoon spell will continue till July 1, bringing more rain, wind, and thunderstorms to most districts of Punjab. Authorities also anticipate 25% more rainfall this monsoon season than usual, raising concerns about further risks.

Citizens are urged to stay alert and call the PDMA emergency helpline at 1129 in case of emergencies.
