Climate

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has announced a strong crackdown on encroachments along the banks of the Swat River. The decision was made following the directives of Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur in a high-level meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary in Swat.
The meeting, attended by provincial ministers, MPAs, senior government officials, and the Chief Minister’s spokesperson, focused on flood preparedness and holding authorities accountable for recent administrative lapses.
Encroachments and Illegal Structures to Be Removed
According to the Chief Minister’s spokesperson, the district administration has been directed to immediately demolish illegal structures built along the Swat River. The action aims to prevent future flood damage and environmental degradation.
“Strong and indiscriminate action will be taken against all encroachments,” the spokesperson confirmed. Hotels constructed without proper permits will also be dismantled, and permanent registration of all existing hotels is to be initiated.
Ban on Soil Extraction & Flood Response Upgrades
In a significant environmental protection step, the government has banned both legal and illegal soil extraction along the riverbanks. This practice has been cited as a contributing factor to riverbed instability and increased flood risk.
Additionally, the meeting approved the purchase of drones designed to assist in emergency rescue operations during floods. These drones will be used to deliver life jackets, ropes, and other safety equipment in high-risk situations.
Police Accountability and Preparedness
Sources revealed that during the meeting, Swat’s Superintendent of Police (SP) was asked to explain the absence of law enforcement at a recent accident site. Disciplinary action is expected against those found negligent.
The KP government’s actions reflect a broader commitment to disaster preparedness and environmental management, particularly in the flood-prone Swat region. As monsoon approaches, authorities are working to strengthen local response capabilities and eliminate human-induced risks.
