3 Held in Abbottabad Gang-Rape Case After Social Media Outcry

Police on Monday arrested three men allegedly involved in the gang-rape of a woman in the Bakot area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Abbottabad district.

According to Abbottabad police spokesperson Azam Mir Afzal, the suspects reportedly assaulted a woman from Rawalpindi last Wednesday after luring her to a friend’s house. “District Police Officer (DPO) Umar Tufail ordered immediate arrests after the incident gained traction on platforms like Facebook and TikTok,” he told Dawn.com.

Bakot SHO Arshad Khan was dispatched to the village, where the local community expressed intense anger over the brutal assault. On his complaint, a first information report (FIR) was registered at Bakot police station under Sections 34 (common intention), 375A (rape), and 376 (punishment for rape) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

The FIR reveals harrowing details of the crime: one suspect allegedly picked up the woman in a car from Rawalpindi and brought her to his friend’s house, where he and two others took turns raping her. The homeowner confessed during initial interrogation and identified his two accomplices, who have also been arrested.

Police added that while all three suspects are in custody, the victim’s location remains unknown and efforts to trace her are ongoing.

This disturbing incident underscores the persistence of sexual violence in Pakistan despite the presence of strict anti-rape legislation. Under the law, rape is punishable by death or a prison sentence ranging from 10 to 25 years.

Earlier in July, a 19-year-old newlywed in Karachi’s Lyari died after suffering from brutal marital rape. In another case, police arrested a key suspect involved in the gang-rape of a girl in Karachi’s Ittehad Town.

The growing number of such incidents has reignited public demands for stronger implementation of the law, better victim protection mechanisms, and quicker judicial proceedings.
