Three Held in Ibrahim Hyderi Gang-Rape, Robbery Case

KARACHI — Malir police have arrested three suspects allegedly involved in a gang-rape and robbery incident in Karachi’s Ibrahim Hyderi area. According to a statement by police spokesperson Mohammed Imran, the arrests were made through technical surveillance and intelligence gathering.

The suspects are accused of looting a home and gang-raping a woman during the crime. "They not only stole gold ornaments, cash, and other valuables but also subjected the victim to sexual violence," said the police statement.

During initial interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed to committing the crime with two other accomplices who remain at large. The arrested individuals also admitted to forcibly removing the woman’s earrings before fleeing the scene.

Police recovered a loaded pistol from the possession of the suspects. Raids are currently underway to apprehend the remaining members of the gang, and authorities are examining the criminal records of the arrested individuals.

Despite stringent laws under Sections 375-A and 376 of the Pakistan Penal Code—which include penalties such as life imprisonment or the death sentence for gang rape—sexual violence against women remains widespread in Pakistan.

This latest arrest follows the recent capture of a suspect in the gang-rape of a girl in Ittehad Town earlier this month. In a separate case in February, a sessions court sentenced a man to 10 years in prison for raping a minor boy in Lyari.

A recent report by the Sustainable Social Development Organisation (SSDO) paints a grim picture of the justice system, revealing that the conviction rate for sexual crimes remains around 0.5% nationwide as of 2024.

In 2023 alone, over 500 women and underage girls were sexually assaulted in Karachi, while 4,042 cases of physical assault were reported, according to data from a police surgeon cited by Dawn.com.

Authorities urge the public to report suspicious activity and cooperate with ongoing investigations as police intensify efforts to ensure justice for survivors.
