Two Levies personnel assigned to protect a polio vaccination team were killed in an armed attack by unidentified assailants on Wednesday in the Teeri area of Mastung district, Balochistan. The incident underscores the persistent threats faced by healthcare and security workers in Pakistan's battle against polio.
According to Mastung Assistant Commissioner Akram Harifal, the attack occurred while the Levies personnel were escorting the vaccination team. One of the guards died at the scene, while the other succumbed to his injuries while being transported to Nawab Ghous Bakhsh Memorial Hospital.
Law enforcement agencies arrived at the scene promptly to secure the area and gather evidence. AC Harifal confirmed that enhanced security measures have since been implemented for vaccination teams in the district.
The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from political and government figures. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif denounced the incident, stating that terrorists targeting health workers are “enemies of humanity.” He emphasized that such acts would not derail the government’s commitment to eradicating polio. “Our anti-polio campaign will continue with full determination,” he declared, urging the public not to lose hope and to ensure their children are vaccinated.
Balochistan government spokesperson Shahid Rind echoed these sentiments, asserting that a comprehensive investigation is underway. “We will not allow the polio campaign to be sabotaged under any circumstances,” he affirmed, while paying tribute to the martyred personnel and reaffirming the government’s resolve to protect vaccination workers.
The attack comes amid the second nationwide polio campaign of 2025, launched by the Prime Minister on April 21 and set to continue through April 27. Tragically, it follows a similar attack earlier this week on police personnel assigned to polio duty in South Waziristan’s Kalosha area.
Pakistan and Afghanistan remain the only two countries where polio is still endemic. Polio workers and their escorts have frequently been targeted by militants who falsely claim the vaccination campaigns are a cover for espionage or other conspiracies.
