2 Policemen Martyred, 3 Injured in Terrorist Attack on Shangla Checkpost

Terrorists targeted a police checkpost in the Gunangar area of Shangla district's Chakesar Tehsil in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, leaving two policemen martyred and three others injured. The incident highlights the growing challenges faced by security forces in combating terrorism in the region.

According to the Shangla District Police spokesperson Umar Rehman, Assistant Sub-Inspector Mohammad Hassan and Head Constable Nisar Ahmad were martyred in the attack, while three constables sustained injuries. Rehman revealed that the attack involved heavy weapons, including rocket launchers and hand grenades, which caused the small building's walls to collapse, burying a constable beneath the debris.

The injured personnel were immediately rushed to the district headquarters hospital in Battagram with the help of locals and officials from the Dandai police station.

This tragic incident follows a recent trend of increased militancy in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. After the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) reneged on a ceasefire agreement in 2022, the region has witnessed a sharp surge in attacks on law enforcement agencies. The Interior Ministry reported that out of 1,566 terrorism incidents in the past 10 months, 948 occurred in KP alone, resulting in 583 deaths.

The Gunangar attack marks the second assault in Shangla within three days. On Saturday, a civilian was killed, and two policemen were injured in another checkpost attack in Puran Tehsil.

The remote location of Gunangar, near the Karakoram Highway and the Indus River, complicates swift emergency responses. Security forces have since cordoned off the area and initiated a search operation, with additional contingents dispatched to the site.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi strongly condemned the attack and paid tribute to the martyred policemen, calling them the pride of the nation. He expressed grief over the loss of lives and prayed for the swift recovery of the injured.

“The martyrs are our pride. We are standing tall with their families,” the minister said, emphasizing the critical role of KP police in the ongoing war against terrorism.

As Khyber Pakhtunkhwa continues to bear the brunt of increased militant activity, the sacrifices of its law enforcement personnel remain a testament to their unwavering commitment to ensuring national security.
