Acting US Envoy, Italian Interior Minister Meet Pakistan’s Mohsin Naqvi Amid India-Pakistan Tensions

Amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, Acting US Ambassador Natalie Baker and Italian Interior Minister Matteo Pente Duce held crucial meetings with Pakistan’s Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi in Islamabad on Thursday to discuss the regional security crisis.

In a meeting attended by US Political Counselor Zack Harken-Rider and Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry, the US diplomat was briefed on the aftermath of India’s surprise nighttime strike, which resulted in 26 civilian deaths and over 40 injuries in Pakistan’s Punjab and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi told the US delegation that India’s unprovoked aggression had put the entire South Asian region at risk, describing it as a clear violation of international law and human rights. “Pakistan has so far shown extreme restraint, but we will not compromise our national security,” he said. “Friendly nations were informed well in advance of India’s dangerous intentions.”

Naqvi emphasized that Pakistan responded with strength, downing five Indian warplanes, including three Rafale jets, and destroying multiple military posts, including a brigade HQ. Reports of the Indian army raising the white flag at the Chura complex on the Line of Control (LoC) were also shared with the US officials.

In a separate meeting, the Interior Minister briefed his Italian counterpart, Matteo Pente Duce, on India’s actions and the humanitarian impact on civilians. The two leaders agreed to form a joint working group to enhance collaboration on security, counter-narcotics, human trafficking, and counter-terrorism.

The Italian minister condemned the loss of civilian lives and expressed solidarity with Pakistan. He also praised the professionalism of Pakistan’s law enforcement agencies and pledged to send an Italian team to Pakistan to help strengthen border security and joint anti-trafficking efforts.

Naqvi highlighted Pakistan’s significant achievements in the past year, including the arrest of over 3,000 human traffickers and 500 facilitators, and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to tackling narcotics and cross-border crimes.
