The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) hearing the GHQ attack case has approved a request for medical examination and a meeting with PTI founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The approval was granted by ATC Judge Amjad Ali Shah during a hearing held at Adiala Jail, where Imran Khan is currently incarcerated.
The hearing of the GHQ attack case continues, with significant developments. Another accused in the case, Shaheer Sikandar, was indicted on May 9, marking the indictment of 118 out of the 119 individuals charged in connection with the attack. The case involves allegations surrounding the violent events at the General Headquarters (GHQ) of the Pakistan Army.
Imran Khan’s legal team had filed a request for the former Prime Minister to undergo a medical examination and to be allowed to meet his sons. Judge Amjad Ali Shah approved both requests, ensuring that the PTI leader will receive the necessary medical attention and be permitted to speak with his family during his detention. This development follows concerns about Imran Khan’s health and the emotional toll his imprisonment may be taking.
In addition to the medical request, the court also addressed several other applications related to the case. Omar Ayub, a co-accused in the case, had filed a request to access the case record. Meanwhile, Ajmal Sabir and Malik Ansar submitted applications for acquittal, arguing that they should be released from the case. The court will hear arguments on these applications at the next hearing.
As for the future proceedings of the case, the prosecution has requested that the hearings be conducted on a daily basis starting from January 13, a request that was accepted by the court. This decision means that the case will now progress at an accelerated pace, with the next hearing scheduled for mid-January.
The GHQ attack case remains one of the most politically sensitive and high-profile legal matters in Pakistan. It involves several prominent figures, including Imran Khan, and has captured the public's attention due to its connection to the broader political unrest following the ousting of the PTI government in April 2022.
As the case moves forward, the granting of medical and family visitation requests for Imran Khan signals that the court is considering his well-being amidst the ongoing legal proceedings. However, the continuation of the case with a daily hearing schedule indicates that the judicial process will intensify in the coming weeks.
