Clashes Break Out at Sukkur Lawyers’ Convention Over 27th Amendment; Five Detained

Clashes erupted at the All Sindh Lawyers’ Convention in Sukkur on Saturday, leading to the detention of five individuals after tensions flared over the 27th Constitutional Amendment.

The convention, held at the Sukkur District Bar, saw lawyers divided over the amendment, with one group chanting slogans against President Asif Ali Zardari, while another expressed support for him. The situation escalated when a verbal altercation turned into a scuffle involving plainclothes individuals who reportedly disrupted the proceedings.

According to Advocate KB Laghari, five outsiders who entered the convention in plainclothes and provoked the conflict were apprehended by lawyers and handed over to the police. Laghari stressed that “lawyers are brothers, and no one can make us fight.”

During the unrest, Sukkur District Bar Association President Qurban Ali Malano felt unwell and was moved to the hospital due to a deteriorating condition. Several senior lawyers, including Aamir Nawaz Waraich, Laghari, Haseeb Jamali, and Shafqat Raheem, sustained minor injuries while trying to protect their colleagues.

The individuals causing the disruption were allegedly PPP workers, with Mairaj Gopang, a Shaheed Benazir Division worker and Peoples Students Federation office-bearer, reportedly at the center of the conflict. The disturbances were said to have started when Karachi Bar General Secretary Rehman Korai mentioned Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar during his speech.

Syed Zain Shah, president of the Sindh United Party and convener of the Save Sindh River Movement, condemned the attack, stating it was “not only an assault on the legal fraternity but also a clear attack on the Constitution, law, democratic values, and freedom of expression.”

Lanjar responded promptly, expressing regret over the incident and calling the attack “highly condemnable.” The home minister assured that those responsible would face strict legal action and emphasized that lawyers were akin to family, urging unity and discipline within the legal fraternity. He confirmed that a full investigation had been ordered to determine accountability and that restoring a peaceful environment remained a top government priority.
