Karachi Sees Over 61,850 E-Challans Issued Amid Traffic Crackdown

Traffic authorities in Karachi have issued more than 61,850 e-challans so far, targeting a wide range of traffic violations across the city, according to data shared with top authorities.

The e-challan system, aimed at improving road safety and reducing traffic violations, has recorded challans against 589 government vehicles and 118 mobile phones and vehicles of Sindh Police. Heavy vehicles also faced scrutiny, with 964 challans issued for law violations.

Motorcycle riders were penalized heavily, with 11,000 challans issued for riding without helmets. Similarly, 41,431 challans were issued for not wearing seat belts, highlighting ongoing challenges in compliance with traffic safety rules.

Other violations include 2,200 challans for running red lights, 1,447 challans for using mobile phones while driving, and 795 challans for vehicles with illegal tinted glasses.

The e-challan system, which electronically records and fines traffic violations, is part of the city’s ongoing efforts to improve road discipline and reduce accidents. Authorities have emphasized that continued enforcement and public awareness campaigns are necessary to ensure citizens adhere to traffic laws.

Traffic experts note that the high number of violations reflects both a lack of awareness and weak enforcement in the past, but the e-challan initiative is gradually instilling accountability among drivers in Karachi.
