MILITARY

A police officer was martyred, and three others sustained injuries during an intense operation in Swat District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on Friday. The police successfully eliminated a wanted drug smuggler, who was also a prime suspect in the murder of a Station House Officer (SHO).
Operation Against Drug Smugglers Turns Deadly
The police operation was carried out in Fizagat, targeting criminals involved in the December 2024 killing of SHO Rahim Khan of Manglawar police station. The SHO was martyred during an earlier encounter with drug smugglers in Mingora city, prompting law enforcement to intensify efforts against the suspects.
Swat District Police Officer’s (DPO) spokesperson Moin Ali stated that the raid was intelligence-based, but the criminals opened fire, resulting in the martyrdom of Constable Niaz Muhammad and injuries to ASI Amjad Iqbal, Constable Muhammad Hussain, and Constable Sarfaraz.
Wanted Smuggler Eliminated
In retaliation, police shot and killed Ahmadzeb, a notorious drug trafficker and a prime suspect in SHO Rahim’s murder. Law enforcement surrounded the suspect’s house following a tip-off, leading to a four-hour-long exchange of fire.
Aftermath and Ongoing Crackdown
The injured officers were immediately shifted to Saidu Sharif Hospital, where their condition was reported as stable. A large police force was deployed to secure the area as authorities launched further investigations into the network of drug traffickers in the region.
SHO Mujeeb Alam confirmed that police meticulously searched the four-storey building, gathering crucial evidence related to drug smuggling and criminal activities.
Rising Drug-Related Crimes in Pakistan
The incident highlights the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and related crimes in Pakistan. In recent weeks:
- A massive drug haul was seized from a former policeman’s house in Faisalabad.
- A Peshawar court sentenced two excise officers to life imprisonment for drug smuggling.
- In January, KP’s Excise and Narcotics Control Department arrested a suspect transporting four kilograms of crystal meth in Dera Ismail Khan.
Authorities continue to tighten their grip on drug networks, but Friday’s operation underscores the dangers police face in their fight against crime.
