CTD Karachi Arrests Three Alleged TTP Terrorists Plotting Police Attacks

The Sindh Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) on Monday arrested three alleged members of the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in Karachi’s Sohrab Goth. The suspects were reportedly planning attacks on police personnel in the city, according to a press release issued by the CTD, a copy of which is available with Dawn.com.

The arrested individuals were identified as Farhad, Haji Rehman, and Muhammad Sagheer. During interrogation, the suspects revealed that they were under orders from the TTP leadership to target police officers in Karachi. A CTD spokesperson confirmed the arrests, stating that the department recovered three pistols and pamphlets from banned organizations, which were found in the possession of the suspects. The recovered weapons will be sent for forensic analysis to determine if they were used in prior criminal activities.

Previous Incidents

This is not the first time Sohrab Goth has witnessed attacks on law enforcement. In June, the TTP claimed responsibility for a shooting that targeted police officers in the area, killing Police Constable Muhammad Yasin and injuring another officer, Salman Abbas. The suspects arrested today are believed to be linked to the same militant faction responsible for these previous assaults.

Rising Terrorist Threat

The arrests come at a time when Pakistan is facing a growing wave of terrorism. According to data from the Pak Institute for Peace Studies (PIPS), an Islamabad-based think tank, the country saw a sharp rise in terrorist incidents in August, with 59 attacks reported compared to 38 in July. The resurgence of militancy, particularly from the TTP, has raised alarms among security agencies, especially in urban centers like Karachi and Lahore.

Punjab CTD’s Operations

In a parallel development, the Punjab CTD carried out 129 intelligence-based operations on Saturday, leading to the arrest of seven terrorists. These operations are part of the broader national strategy to curb terrorism, which has seen a resurgence in various parts of the country.

The CTD has been playing a critical role in countering terrorist threats, particularly in major cities like Karachi, where law enforcement remains a primary target for militant organizations like the TTP. The department continues to investigate the suspects, and further details are expected to emerge as the probe unfolds.

Conclusion

As Pakistan grapples with a renewed surge in terrorist activity, these arrests signal a proactive effort by law enforcement to disrupt planned attacks and maintain public safety. However, the rising number of incidents countrywide indicates that the threat remains substantial, and security forces will need to stay vigilant to counter future terrorist plots.
