Defamation Bill Signed into Law by Acting Governor Punjab Amidst Controversy

The Punjab Assembly's Defamation Bill, previously met with resistance from Governor Punjab Sardar Saleem Haider, has now been signed into law by Acting Governor Punjab Malik Ahmed Khan. This move comes after President Asif Zardari advised Governor Haider to go on leave following a meeting with representatives of the Muslim League (N).

The law, applicable to print, electronic, and social media platforms including YouTube, TikTok, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, allows for the filing of defamation cases against false and untrue news that may damage an individual's personal life or public position. The bill also stipulates compensation of up to 3 million rupees for affected parties.

Under this law, cases of defamation against individuals holding constitutional positions will be heard by the bench of the High Court. Additionally, women and transgender individuals will have access to government legal assistance for their defense in defamation cases.

The signing of the Defamation Bill into law has sparked debates on media freedom and legal accountability, with concerns raised regarding its potential impact on freedom of expression and journalistic practices.

The controversy surrounding the bill's passage underscores the complex interplay between legal frameworks, political maneuvering, and public discourse in the realm of media regulation and accountability.
