Disappointing Start for Pakistani Shooters Talat and Joseph at Paris Olympics

High expectations for Pakistani Olympians Kishmala Talat and Gulfam Joseph were met with disappointment on the first day of the Paris 2024 Olympics. Competing in the 10m Air Pistol events, both athletes failed to advance to the finals.

Two-time Olympian Gulfam Joseph, who had narrowly missed the finals in Tokyo 2020 with a ninth-place finish, could only manage 22nd place in the qualification round this time, scoring 571. This was a stark contrast to his 578 score in Tokyo. Leading the 33-person qualifier was Serbia’s Damir Mikec with an impressive 584, followed by Italy’s Federico Nilo Maldini and Germany’s Christian Reitz, who scored 581 and 580, respectively.

The men’s final on Sunday will notably lack South Asian representation, with India’s Sarabjot Singh, Tokyo 2020 gold medalist, finishing in ninth place with a 577, and his compatriot Arjun Singh Cheema ranking 18th with a 574.

In the women’s event, Kishmala Talat finished 31st in her Olympic debut, scoring 567. Hungary’s Veronika Major and South Korea’s Ye Jin Oh led the field, both scoring 584, while India’s Manu Bhaker secured third place. Bhaker’s performance was particularly notable, marking a significant comeback after a 12th-place finish in Tokyo due to a gun malfunction.

The Pakistani duo of Talat and Joseph will have another chance to shine in the 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team event on July 29. On the Indian side, Arjun Singh Cheema will team up with Rhythm Sangwan, who finished 15th in the women’s event.

Earlier this year, Talat made history by becoming the first Pakistani woman to directly qualify for the Olympics, after winning silver at the 2024 Asian Shooting Championships. She will compete in her final event, the 25m Pistol Women’s qualification round, later in the Games.
