ECP Extends Islamabad LG Poll Nomination Deadline to Dec 30

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Friday extended the deadline for the submission of nomination papers for the local government elections in Islamabad by three days, following a request by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

According to the revised schedule, candidates can now submit their nomination papers until December 30 instead of the earlier deadline of December 27.

The extension was granted after an application was submitted to the ECP by Secretary Baldiat Committee Anjum Shahzad Tanoli, requesting the chief election commissioner to reconsider the deadline due to an official local holiday.

In the application, Tanoli stated that December 26 had been declared a local holiday, which would significantly disrupt the nomination process. He highlighted that Islamabad has 125 union councils and each union council requires at least nine councillors to submit nomination papers.

“The announced holiday will create serious administrative and logistical difficulties for candidates, proposers and concerned offices, leading to unnecessary congestion and hardship on the final day,” the application said.

The ECP accepted the request and issued a notification extending the deadline to ensure a smoother and fairer nomination process.

According to the election schedule, polling for the Islamabad local government elections will be held on February 15, while the consolidation of results will take place between February 16 and 19.

Despite expressing concerns over possible rigging, PTI has decided to fully participate in the local government elections. Party leadership has stated that, in line with PTI policy, priority in awarding tickets will be given to workers who have remained loyal to the party and its ideology and have made sacrifices over the past three years.
