Eight Militants Killed in Bannu Intelligence-Based Operation: ISPR

Security forces killed eight militants during an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bannu district, the military’s media wing said in a statement issued on Saturday.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the operation — conducted on November 21 — targeted the reported presence of individuals it described as khawarij belonging to what it referred to as “Indian-proxy Fitna-al-Khawarij,” a term the state uses for militants associated with the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

ISPR said weapons and ammunition were recovered from the militants, who it stated had been involved in attacks against security forces, law enforcement agencies, and civilians.

Operations Intensify in KP

The statement highlighted “strengthened collaborative efforts” between law enforcement agencies (LEAs) and security forces, noting that intelligence-led operations in the region have intensified. These coordinated measures aim to limit militant mobility, dismantle facilitation networks, and hinder attempts at regrouping, according to the military.

ISPR added that a sanitisation operation was underway to ensure no remaining militants were present in the area. It emphasised that the ongoing counterterrorism campaign under the government-backed Azm-i-Istehkam framework would continue “at full pace” to eliminate what it described as foreign-sponsored terrorism.

Surge in Terror Attacks

Pakistan has seen an increase in militant activity — particularly in KP and Balochistan — since the TTP ended its ceasefire with the state in November 2022 and vowed to resume attacks on security and law enforcement personnel.

Earlier on Saturday, police in Bannu foiled a terrorist attempt to blow up Dawa bridge using an improvised explosive device (IED). One day earlier, seven people were killed when a peace committee office in the district was attacked. Police said one of the dead was a former militant who had surrendered to the state, often referred to as a “good Taliban,” along with several of his relatives.

The latest operation reflects the broader spike in security challenges in KP as authorities continue efforts to curb militant networks operating in the region.
