POLITICS & POLICY MAKING

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has issued a formal notice to the Punjab government regarding the repeated delays in holding local government elections in the province. The notice was sent to the Chief Secretary of Punjab and the Secretary of Local Government, urging swift action to ensure timely elections.
According to the ECP’s notice, the commission has taken several steps to facilitate the holding of local government elections in Punjab. These include conducting multiple meetings and sending numerous reminders to the provincial government. However, the commission expressed concerns over the lack of visible progress and clarity regarding the steps taken by the Punjab government to move forward with the elections.
The notice highlights that the local government law in Punjab has been amended four times, and the ECP has carried out delimitation exercises three times at the request of the provincial government. Furthermore, the ECP granted a four-week extension to complete the Punjab Local Government Law, which was shared with the Election Commission on December 26. The ECP sent its feedback to the provincial government on January 23, but, according to the commission, no further actions have been taken by the Punjab government to enact the legislation or hold elections.
The Election Commission emphasized that no further extensions would be granted, and the legislation must be completed within a month. In the notice, the ECP also informed the Punjab government that it would be holding a hearing on the matter of local government elections, which is scheduled for February 26 at 10:00 am.
This development comes amidst growing concerns over the delay in the democratic process at the local level, as citizens await the establishment of local governments to address their issues more effectively.
