POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
An election tribunal on Tuesday dismissed a petition filed by incarcerated Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Yasmin Rashid, challenging Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif’s victory from Lahore’s NA-130 constituency in the 2024 general elections.
The tribunal, headed by retired Justice Rana Zahid Mahmood, rejected the petition on technical grounds, ruling that the petitioner failed to meet the mandatory requirements set out under the Election Act, 2017 for filing an election petition.
According to the tribunal’s decision, procedural deficiencies in the petition rendered it non-maintainable. A detailed written order is expected to be issued later.
Yasmin Rashid had filed the petition on April 16, 2024, challenging the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) notification of Nawaz Sharif’s victory. She argued that the ECP had violated the law while issuing the notification and alleged manipulation of election results to ensure her defeat.
In her plea, Rashid requested the tribunal to set aside Nawaz Sharif’s victory and declare her the returned candidate from the constituency.
The ECP had officially notified Nawaz Sharif’s victory from NA-130 on February 13, 2024. According to the election results issued by the commission, Nawaz Sharif secured 179,310 votes, while Yasmin Rashid finished second with 104,485 votes.
The dismissal of the petition marks another legal setback for the PTI leader, who has remained in custody in connection with multiple cases since the May 9 incidents.
