National Assembly Committee Raises Alarm on Women’s Drug Abuse, Social Media Harassment

The National Assembly Standing Committee on Human Rights on Tuesday expressed serious concern over the increasing use of drugs among women and the rising incidents of harassment on social media.

Committee Chairperson Nosheen Iftikhar said that cases of divorce, murder, and suicide are escalating in Pakistan, partly due to the abuse of drugs such as ice. Committee member Asia Naz Tanoli added that a white chocolate-like drug is increasingly being used among girls and offered to provide evidence on the matter. The committee decided to convene a separate meeting to address drug-related issues specifically.

On the issue of social media harassment, member Naz Baloch highlighted that women have easy access to potentially dangerous apps, while the cybercrime wing often fails to resolve cases. She said many women fear filing complaints, and a majority of cases are closed after six months.

Chairperson Nosheen Iftikhar also alleged that some FIA officials leak information about complaints to the accused, and evidence such as mobile phones is sometimes lost. She revealed that she herself has been a victim of cybercrime.

In response, the committee decided to convene a special meeting of the Women’s Caucus to address cybercrime and social media harassment. Additionally, the committee plans to contact Meta administration to seek solutions.

During the session, the committee passed the Islamabad Capital Territory Senior Citizens Amendment Bill 2025 by majority vote, while consideration of the Pakistan Climate Refugees Rights and Protection Bill 2024 was postponed.
