POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Tuesday held a telephone conversation with his Saudi counterpart, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, during which both leaders exchanged views on the current regional situation and recent developments, the Foreign Office (FO) said.
According to an FO statement shared on social media, Dar expressed satisfaction over the positive trajectory of bilateral relations between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. In response, Prince Faisal bin Farhan reaffirmed the Kingdom’s commitment to further strengthening and enhancing ties with Islamabad.
Both foreign ministers also exchanged season’s greetings and conveyed best wishes for the New Year, which were warmly reciprocated, the FO added.
Pakistan and Saudi Arabia share a multifaceted relationship rooted in strategic military cooperation, strong economic ties, and shared Islamic heritage. Riyadh has long been a key partner for Islamabad, providing economic assistance, energy supplies, and financial support during times of economic stress.
In September this year, the two countries signed a landmark mutual defence agreement, under which an attack on either nation would be considered an attack on both, marking a significant step in deepening defence cooperation.
The telephone conversation came against the backdrop of evolving regional developments. Earlier on Tuesday, the Saudi-led coalition carried out strikes targeting what it described as foreign military support to southern separatists at Yemen’s Mukalla port.
Last week, Pakistan reiterated its full support for Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic efforts to ensure peace and stability in Yemen. “Pakistan expresses its full support for the diplomatic efforts being undertaken by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for ensuring peace and stability in the Republic of Yemen. We also commend the efforts of the United Arab Emirates in this regard,” the FO had said in a statement.
In November, the military leadership of Pakistan and Saudi Arabia also vowed to enhance bilateral defence cooperation. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), both sides discussed the evolving global and regional environment and reaffirmed their resolve to further deepen the strong brotherly ties and enduring defence partnership between the two countries.
