At least seven people were killed and dozens more injured after an explosion in central Kabul on Monday, according to the Italian NGO EMERGENCY, which operates a hospital in the Afghan capital.
The blast occurred in the Shahr-i-Naw area, a district known for its foreign presence and considered one of Kabul’s most secure neighborhoods, which houses offices, embassies, shopping complexes, and hotels.
“Twenty people have been received at EMERGENCY’s Surgical Centre in Kabul following an explosion this afternoon in the Shahr-i-Naw area, near the hospital. Among those received were seven people dead on arrival,” the NGO said in a statement.
Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran told AFP that the explosion happened at a hotel on Gulfaroshi Street. He did not provide details on the cause of the blast.
China’s state news agency Xinhua, citing a hotel employee, reported that two Chinese citizens were seriously wounded, and an Afghan security guard was killed in the incident.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. Authorities have yet to release further information regarding the perpetrators or the motive.
The Shahr-i-Naw blast marks another security incident in Kabul, which, despite being considered relatively safe, remains vulnerable to attacks targeting foreigners and high-profile locations.
