An explosion of unknown nature occurred on a road near a Levies checkpoint in Batkhela city of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Malakand division on Tuesday. Authorities confirmed there were no casualties or injuries reported in the incident.
According to Malakand Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Muhibullah, the blast occurred earlier in the day but did not result in any loss of life or pose a threat to the area.
"According to the preliminary investigation, no explosives of any kind were used in the explosion," he stated, ruling out the possibility of it being a terrorist attack. "The explosion was not dangerous and there is no fear or threat in the area," he assured.
Images from the scene showed a charred wall near the blast site, though no significant damage was reported. Officials have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion, exploring possibilities such as a gas leak, an improvised explosive device (IED), or another accidental cause.
The incident comes at a time when Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is grappling with rising insecurity. Militant attacks have surged since the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) broke off a ceasefire with the government in November 2022.
Just last week, a report from the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) revealed that March 2025 marked a grim milestone, with over 100 militant attacks recorded in a single month — the highest since November 2014.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan remain the most affected provinces, with KP alone reporting 206 fatalities in March, including 49 security personnel, 34 civilians, and 123 militants. The province also saw 115 people injured in the same period.
Within KP, the mainland areas recorded 124 deaths — 32 civilians, 30 security personnel, and 62 militants — while 65 others were wounded. Meanwhile, the tribal districts witnessed 82 deaths, including 61 militants, 19 security personnel, and 2 civilians.
Security forces have intensified counter-terror operations in response to the surge in militant violence, with 123 militants reportedly killed in KP in March 2025 alone.
Although Tuesday’s Batkhela explosion appears unrelated to terrorist activity based on initial findings, the region remains on high alert as security forces continue efforts to stabilize the situation.
