POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
Senator Faisal Vawda on Wednesday said that the “plane regarding the 27th Constitutional Amendment has taken off,” asserting that the numbers required for its approval in Parliament are already “very high.”
Speaking to reporters after meeting Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman in Islamabad, Vawda said the two discussed the country’s political situation and the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill.
“I often meet Maulana Fazlur Rehman, and every meeting is positive. He is a strong and seasoned politician,” said Vawda. “This is not a matter of numbers — it’s about Pakistan’s survival and security. Maulana Fazlur Rehman has always stood by Pakistan.”
Vawda said the clauses of the amendment were shared with the JUI-F leader, who assured that he would review them carefully before making a decision. He emphasized that the amendment process is rooted in consultation, not confrontation.
“The 18th Amendment is not being abolished,” he clarified. “We are reviewing the 27th Amendment together. Article 243 includes not only land warfare but also cyber, global, and economic dimensions of defense.”
Vawda added that all political parties, including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), should be taken into confidence. “If PTI wants to do good politics, it should support the amendment. Strengthening the armed forces means strengthening Pakistan’s defense,” he said. “But if PTI wants to do negative politics — then let’s eat the chips,” he quipped.
The senator also lauded Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s political influence, saying, “If he supports the amendment, it will be a positive development. He is an important figure in Pakistani politics. I’m not doing the government’s work — I’m doing my own.”
Vawda noted that the 27th Amendment “plane has taken off” and expressed confidence that “the numbers will be found where needed.” He also praised Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari as “a strong political combination,” calling the PPP leadership “key players” in the current political environment.
Regarding the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), Vawda said, “The group was banned due to specific reasons. If something happens in front of the police, there will naturally be a reaction.”
Background on the 27th Constitutional Amendment
The federal government has already begun preparations for the 27th Constitutional Amendment, which seeks to amend Article 243 of the Constitution to formally recognize the title of Field Marshal for the Army Chief.
The amendment also proposes the establishment of constitutional courts, the transfer of magisterial powers to the district level, and consideration of a unified national curriculum across Pakistan.
According to sources, the 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill is expected to be tabled and passed next week, marking a significant shift in Pakistan’s constitutional and defense framework.
