PM Shehbaz Tasks Ayaz Sadiq to Build Consensus on 27th Constitutional Amendment

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has tasked National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq with developing a parliamentary consensus on the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment, which is expected to be tabled in Parliament soon.

According to parliamentary sources, Speaker Ayaz Sadiq convened a meeting of all parliamentary leaders today at 4 p.m. in the Speaker’s Lounge of the Parliament House. The meeting was attended by chief whips, members of allied parties, and representatives of opposition groups, including PTI and JUI-F.

Sources said the meeting’s agenda focuses on finalizing a strategy for the amendment’s approval, and participants will be briefed on the key features of the proposed legislation.

The Speaker is also expected to hold separate consultations with parliamentary leaders to bridge differences. If a consensus cannot be reached, sources say the government may rely on its numerical strength in Parliament to pass the bill.

Meanwhile, the PML-N leadership has directed its lawmakers and allied members to reach Islamabad, signaling that the bill may be tabled for approval in the coming week.

According to reports, the 27th Constitutional Amendment seeks to amend Article 243, formally recognizing the rank of Field Marshal in the Constitution. The proposed legislation also includes provisions for the establishment of constitutional courts, the transfer of magisterial powers to the district level, and the potential implementation of a uniform national curriculum across Pakistan.

Sources confirmed that the 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill is likely to be presented and passed next week, following consultations among coalition partners and parliamentary leaders.

The amendment is viewed as a significant step in reshaping Pakistan’s constitutional and administrative framework, with implications for governance, judicial structure, and civil-military alignment.
