Pakistan, Afghan Taliban to Hold Second Round of Peace Talks in Istanbul Tomorrow

The second round of peace talks between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban will be held in Istanbul tomorrow, where the two sides are expected to finalize the mechanism for implementing the ceasefire and discuss measures to ensure Afghan soil is not used for terrorism against Pakistan.

According to diplomatic sources, the talks will take place as scheduled under the mediation of Turkey and Qatar, who have facilitated the ongoing dialogue process between Islamabad and Kabul.

The Pakistani delegation, which will include Defense Minister Khawaja Asif and the National Security Advisor, is expected to leave for Istanbul today. A final decision on the delegation’s leadership will be made after assessing the composition of the Afghan side, which will also include a senior minister.

Sources revealed that Pakistan will convey a clear message during the talks — that Afghan territory must not be used for any form of terrorism or cross-border attacks. The discussions will also address the implementation of previously agreed measures to maintain peace and stability along the shared border.

In the first round of Istanbul talks, both sides had agreed to continue the ceasefire and develop a verification system to monitor compliance. This system will have the authority to impose fines or sanctions in cases of ceasefire violations.

Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan escalated after cross-border attacks on October 11, when Afghan forces allegedly targeted Pakistani border positions following accusations of airstrikes by Pakistan. However, after several rounds of mediation led by Turkey and Qatar, a ceasefire agreement was signed in Doha on October 19, paving the way for renewed dialogue.

The second round of Istanbul talks is expected to be crucial in finalizing the ceasefire’s operational framework, which could mark a significant step toward restoring peace and stability along the Pak-Afghan border.
