POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
The federal cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, convened today at the Prime Minister House in Islamabad and took several significant decisions aimed at improving governance, transparency, and regulatory frameworks. A detailed statement of the meeting was later issued by the Prime Minister’s Office.
Review of Toshakhana Act 2024
One of the key highlights of the meeting was the decision to review the Toshakhana Act 2024 to ensure greater transparency in the Toshakhana system. Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif announced the formation of a committee led by Defense Minister Khawaja Asif to oversee this initiative. The Toshakhana, a repository for gifts received by public officials, has been under scrutiny for lack of accountability in recent years.
Extension for Foreign Pilots
The cabinet approved an extension of two years for the validation of licenses for 86 foreign pilots currently working in Pakistan. Additionally, a three-year extension was granted for the foreign validation of new pilots joining Pakistani airlines in 2025.
Officials explained that these measures are necessary due to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the ban on Pakistani pilots in past years, which forced airlines to hire foreign professionals. The recommendations will proceed through the required legal processes for implementation.
Governance and Appointments
The cabinet approved several governance-related measures, including:
- Amendment to the Rules of Business 1973: The responsibility for the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016 has been transferred from the Ministry of IT to the Ministry of Interior.
- Appointment of Dr. Ammar Habib Khan as Member Finance of the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) Appellate Tribunal on the recommendation of the Ministry of Law and Justice.
- Approval of rules for appointing the chairman and members of the National Seed Development and Regulatory Authority.
Utility Stores Corporation
The Prime Minister announced a committee to accelerate the reconstruction process of the Utility Stores Corporation and closely monitor its progress. He emphasized the need for a robust strategy to effectively deliver the Prime Minister’s Relief Package to the most deserving beneficiaries.
Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) Decisions
The federal cabinet ratified the decisions made by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) during its meetings on January 6 and January 17, 2025.
Prime Minister’s Remarks
Speaking at the meeting, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif reiterated his commitment to ensuring transparency, accountability, and efficient governance. He directed the relevant authorities to prioritize the effective implementation of these decisions to address public concerns and enhance service delivery.
